I am a psychologist, neuroscientist, and data scientist with broad experience across higher education. Through Pranna Consulting, I do consulting, coaching, and training to help teams leverage research toward data-informed decisions and create collaborative, productive, and sustainable work environments.
With over 20 years of experience in research and teaching as a professor of psychology and neuroscience, my work at the intersection of cognitive, social, and brain science provides a strong theoretical and methodological foundation for data science and culture management. My experience in faculty leadership and administration, as well as my years as director of research leading a staff laboratory doing data science and research on student learning and engagement, provides a applied background for leadership, management, and culture management. I have worked closely with boards and presidents, students and faculty, administrators and CEOs, all of which inform my current work as an executive coach; as a research, design, and data consultant; and as a change management consultant and organizational consultant.
I enjoy family and friends, playing music, and outdoor adventure. In addition to backpacking, climbing, and mountaineering, I'm particularly drawn to kayaking: sea and surf kayaking are my passions, and I've chosen these as themes for pictures for Pranna's website because they represent a kind of joyful navigation of whatever comes our way, and embracing of hardships (and sometimes pain) because of the growth that comes from overcoming. This same mindset allows us to navigate our professional lives with a sense of growth and adventure, transforming the inevitable pain and hardship from suffering to joy. I'm also passionate about the world's religions and their role in creating cooperative, collaborative relationships over our evolutionary history. "Pranna" (or prajna) is an important concept in Buddhist thought, meaning direct insight and the means of transcending suffering.
Tom created Pranna Consulting to bring his experience as an academic psychologist and neuroscientist, as a director of research and manager, and as a data and research scientist to a more applied setting, with the ultimate goal of reducing suffering and increasing productivity and sustainability in higher education.
